President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says the death of Emir Ahmed Muhammad Sani II closes a remarkable chapter in Gumel’s history, praising his decades of service, peacebuilding and public leadership.

Tinubu mourns 83-year-old Emir of Gumel after 46-year reign

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of the 16th Emir of Gumel, His Royal Highness Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, describing the monarch’s passing in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, as the end of a remarkable and historic era.

The 83-year-old monarch, who ascended the Gumel throne on December 16, 1980, died after nearly 46 years as emir, placing his reign among the longest served by a first-class traditional ruler in northern Nigeria.

Multiple reports confirmed that Ahmed Muhammad Sani II had been receiving medical care in Egypt.

In a condolence message signed by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the late emir as more than a custodian of tradition, highlighting his record as a scholar, administrator and statesman whose influence extended beyond the palace.

“Alhaji Sani II transformed Gumel into a model of peace and development,” Tinubu said.

The President said the monarch had provided steady leadership through decades of political and security changes in Jigawa State, while promoting education, Islamic scholarship, unity and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Tinubu also praised the late emir’s role in maintaining stability within the Gumel Emirate, describing his leadership as calm, conservative and inclusive.

The President said the monarch consistently placed the welfare of his people at the centre of his public responsibilities.

For Gumel, the loss brings an extraordinary reign to a close. Ahmed Muhammad Sani II became emir only three days after the death of his father, who had occupied the throne until December 13, 1980.

His selection on December 16 that year began a period of traditional leadership that would span almost half a century.

Before becoming emir, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II had already built a varied career in public service.

He worked with the Gumel Native Authority, joined the Nigeria Immigration Service in 1964 and later served as a senior official at the Kazaure Divisional Office.

His education was similarly broad. Reports indicate that he attended schools in Gumel, Hadejia and Kano before studying Public Administration at the Institute of Administration in Zaria.

He later studied Political Science and International Relations at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, completing his studies in 1978.

The late monarch also had a brief but notable political career before his transition to the traditional institution. In 1978, he contested a Senate seat under the Great Nigeria People’s Party but was unsuccessful.

He was subsequently appointed Commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs and Culture in the old Kano State, serving until 1980.

That period left a lasting mark on northern Nigeria’s media landscape. As commissioner, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II was associated with the establishment of The Triumph newspaper and CTV 67, now ARTV, while also overseeing the expansion of Radio Kano.

Those experiences in administration, politics and public communication preceded a long reign in which the emir became a prominent voice on peace, community relations, education and cultural preservation.

Tributes following his death have reflected that breadth of service. Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso described the late monarch as a “distinguished and far-sighted leader” who guided the Gumel Emirate to remarkable heights during more than four decades of service.

Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda similarly described the death as a major loss for the traditional institution and the people of Gumel, saying the monarch’s 46-year reign had promoted peace, education, community development and cultural values.

The timing of the death also comes during a period of transition for several traditional institutions in northern Nigeria.

The Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, Alhaji Bello Sulaiman, died on August 31, just days before the passing of the Gumel monarch.

The contrast between the circumstances of their reigns is striking. While Ahmed Muhammad Sani II inherited a traditional institution in 1980 and remained on the throne through successive political eras, his death now leaves the Gumel Emirate preparing for another chapter and the eventual selection of a successor.

For Tinubu, the passing is not simply the loss of a monarch but the departure of a figure whose public life stretched across traditional leadership, administration, politics, education and media.

“Nigeria has lost a towering traditional leader whose wise counsel will be sorely missed,” Tinubu said, linking the late emir’s legacy to the continuing role of traditional institutions in strengthening national cohesion.

The President extended his condolences to the late emir’s family, the Gumel Emirate Council, the Government and people of Jigawa State and Nigeria’s wider traditional institution.

He prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the monarch’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, while asking for strength and fortitude for the royal family and the people of Gumel and Jigawa State.

After nearly 46 years on the throne, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II leaves behind a legacy shaped by continuity, public service and a powerful commitment to the affairs of his people.

His death closes one of the longest chapters in the modern history of the Gumel Emirate.
