Burna Boy Morocco airport incident as CAF president Patrice Motsepe intervenes after customs flagged the singer’s jewellery

Grammy Award-winning Nigerian artiste Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, narrowly avoided being denied entry into Morocco after customs officials raised concerns over his jewellery on arrival at the airport, the President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has revealed.

Patrice Motsepe disclosed the incident during a press conference, explaining that Moroccan customs officers temporarily held the singer after flagging his heavy gold jewellery for scrutiny upon arrival.

According to the CAF president, the situation escalated to the point where his personal intervention became necessary before it was calmly resolved, allowing the artiste to proceed with his visit.

“I was called to intervene because Burna Boy was stopped at the airport after customs officials noticed his heavy and beautiful gold jewellery,” Motsepe said. “I intervened, and the issue was resolved.”

Burna Boy was in Morocco to headline the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Fan Zone concert held in Rabat on January 16, an event organised as part of activities surrounding the ongoing 2025 AFCON tournament.

The concert, which attracted large crowds, also featured performances by Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy and Moroccan artistes Stormy and Jaylann, underscoring AFCON’s fusion of football and African entertainment.

Despite the brief airport setback, Burna Boy went on to deliver a high-energy performance at the Fan Zone concert, thrilling fans and reinforcing the tournament’s celebratory atmosphere.
