Zack Orji under fire for supporting Tinubu at Abuja rally

Zack Orji has faced social media backlash after leading a pro-Tinubu rally in Abuja, sparking debate on insecurity and economic hardship

Veteran Nollywood actor Zack Orji has come under intense scrutiny on social media after leading supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a solidarity rally in Abuja on Saturday, where participants praised the administration’s infrastructure and security efforts while calling for an end to kidnappings across the country.

The rally, organised by the Re-elect Tinubu For Inclusive Nigeria movement under the slogan “Relax, Tinubu Is Fixing Nigeria,” followed a medical outreach programme that provided free consultations, treatment and medication to hundreds of low-income residents.

Zack Orji, who serves as Deputy Director-General of the movement, addressed journalists during the event and urged Nigerians to support President Tinubu’s reform agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The gathering took place against the backdrop of growing national concern over insecurity, with recent abductions reported in parts of Oyo and Borno states, alongside persistent economic pressure linked to inflation and rising living costs.

However, attention quickly shifted online as videos and images of the rally circulated on social media, with many users focusing on Zack Orji’s visibly frail appearance during the procession.

The footage triggered widespread reactions on X, where several users questioned the involvement of Nollywood figures in political endorsements amid ongoing hardship in the country.

Some critics accused participating celebrities of promoting political messaging that does not reflect the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians facing high fuel prices and inflation.

One user wrote that claims of progress contrast sharply with the economic reality experienced by millions of citizens, while another dismissed the rally as politically motivated entertainment.

Other commenters alleged that some entertainers may be using political alignment to remain relevant in public discourse.

However, not all reactions were negative. Some users defended the actor and other participants, arguing that public figures have the right to express political preferences and support candidates of their choice.

They maintained that political engagement should not be interpreted as an endorsement of hardship but as part of democratic expression.

The debate reflects the deepening divisions in public opinion surrounding the Tinubu administration, with supporters pointing to infrastructure development and policy reforms, while critics highlight insecurity and economic strain.

The controversy surrounding Zack Orji’s participation further underscores the growing influence of celebrities in Nigeria’s political space, where their involvement often generates as much debate as the policies themselves.
