Yeni Kuti made the remarks during an interview with ARISE News, excerpts of which were shared on Monday, as conversations around Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s legacy intensified following renewed global recognition of his work.
Speaking on the enduring influence of the Afrobeat icon, Yeni Kuti said the continued relevance of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti nearly three decades after his death demonstrated a powerful and unmatched legacy.
Yeni Kuti urged both artistes and fans to resist framing modern success against historic achievement, arguing that present day musicians should instead be measured alongside their peers.
She said comparing contemporary performers with Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was akin to confusing entirely different standards, adding that cultural legends deserved respect rather than rivalry.
The comments came days after Fela Anikulapo-Kuti became the first African artiste to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a historic honour presented at the 2026 Recording Academy Special Merit Awards in Los Angeles on January 31.
The award was accepted on behalf of the late musician by his children, Yeni, Kunle, Shalewa and Femi Kuti, marking another milestone in the global acknowledgement of Afrobeat’s lasting impact.
