The US Embassy in Abuja cancels all visa appointments on March 4, 2026, warning of potential protests amid rising US–Iran tensions

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, citing a high risk of protests in Abuja amid escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran.

In a statement published on its website, the Embassy urged American citizens in the Federal Capital Territory to remain indoors and avoid public gatherings.

“Previous protests by some groups have resulted in violent clashes with Nigerian security forces. The Embassy strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences on Wednesday, March 4,” the statement read.

The warning follows reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in airstrikes reportedly carried out by U.S. and Israeli forces.

Iranian officials confirmed the deaths of other high-ranking leaders, prompting missile strikes on U.S. bases in Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of State advised American citizens worldwide to exercise heightened caution and enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program for timely security updates.

The ripple effects of the conflict have reached Nigeria. Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, known as Shi’ites, staged peaceful demonstrations in Potiskum and Nguru in Yobe State, expressing solidarity with Iran and condemning foreign interference.

Citing similar risks in Abuja, the Embassy instructed U.S. citizens to avoid protest areas, remain vigilant, carry proper identification, and familiarise themselves with emergency exits.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has cancelled all visa appointments on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Applicants will be contacted with information on how to reschedule.

Please monitor our website and social media channels for further updates,” the statement added.

The Consular Sections of the Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open, and citizens requiring emergency assistance are advised to contact the Embassy at +234 209 461 4328.
