UNILAG confers PhD in French on 78-year-old Dr Hammid Taju, making him the oldest graduand at the university’s 56th convocation

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has conferred a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in French on 78-year-old Dr Hammid Taju, making him the oldest graduand at the institution’s 56th Convocation Ceremonies.

Convocation Highlights
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola announced the milestone, noting that the ceremonies also celebrated other exceptional individuals, including Oba Sulaimon Bangbande, the Olofin of Isheri, who earned an M.Sc in System Engineering.

“We have among the graduands today, Dr Taju, who obtained PhD in French at a youthful age of 78 years. He is the oldest graduating student this year,” Prof. Ogunsola said.

Academic Distinctions
The convocation also honoured scholars for outstanding contributions:

  • Prof. James Olowokudejo (Botany) and Prof. Duro Oni (Theatre Arts) as Emeritus Professors
  • Prof. Akinsanya Osibogun, Distinguished Professor of Medicine
  • Prof. Ayoka Olusakin, awarded a gold medal in Counselling Psychology

Postgraduate Achievements
A total of 5,775 students graduated from UNILAG’s School of Postgraduate Studies and Business School (ULBS):

  • 479 postgraduate diploma students (41 distinctions)
  • 5,184 Master’s graduates (429 distinctions)
  • 112 ULBS graduates (32 distinctions)

The vice-chancellor emphasised the recognition of individuals for remarkable contributions to scholarship and humanity.
