Tinubu secures French military support in security push

Tinubu secures French military support as Nigeria intensifies efforts to tackle insecurity and strengthen defence capacity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday, March 22, 2026, in Lagos disclosed that Nigeria has secured French military support following a high-level discussion with Emmanuel Macron.

The President made this known during a meeting with state governors at his Ikoyi residence after returning from a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom.

Tinubu said the agreement with France would cover the provision of military equipment and support, as Nigeria intensifies efforts to combat insecurity across the country.

He added that the government is prepared to leverage existing goodwill and lines of credit to acquire equipment and training for security forces.

According to him, discussions with Macron formed part of broader diplomatic efforts to secure international backing in the fight against terrorism.

Describing insecurity as a critical national challenge, Tinubu said the next phase of his administration’s agenda is focused on achieving victory over criminality and violent extremism.

He stressed that insecurity remains a major threat to development, progress and prosperity, urging governors to sustain collective efforts in addressing the crisis.

The President also revealed that military equipment acquisition featured prominently during his engagements in the United Kingdom, reinforcing Nigeria’s push to strengthen its defence capabilities.

At the meeting, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu raised concerns about the potential economic impact of the Middle East crisis, warning of rising inflation and pressure on purchasing power.

He noted that increasing fuel prices could trigger transportation challenges and higher food costs, with implications for citizens’ welfare.

Tinubu called on governors to prioritise support for vulnerable populations, adding that while progress has been made, more can be achieved through coordinated action.

He also extended condolences to Babagana Zulum over recent bombings in the state and urged continued support for affected communities.

Reaffirming his administration’s resolve, Tinubu emphasised sustained investment in technology, logistics and equipment to defeat terrorism and restore national security.

Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and kidnapping across several regions, prompting renewed calls for stronger international cooperation.
