Sheringham questions £35m Tielemans move to Man United

The Manchester United treble winner questions the £35m midfielder’s ability to raise standards at Old Trafford, despite Tielemans’ strong record with Aston Villa.

Sheringham questions £35m Tielemans move to Man United

Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham delivered a harsh Tielemans verdict in London, questioning whether Manchester United midfielder Youri Tielemans has the quality and influence required to help restore the club to the highest level.

Sheringham, a member of Manchester United’s historic 1998/99 treble-winning side, criticised the decision to sign the 29-year-old Belgium international from Aston Villa for £35 million, arguing that the club should have pursued a younger midfielder capable of setting demanding standards at Old Trafford.

Tielemans completed his move to Manchester United on July 14, signing a five-year contract after the club activated his reported £35m release clause.

The midfielder became the second central midfield addition of the summer after Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea.

The move came after a productive spell at Aston Villa, where Tielemans made 134 appearances, scored 10 goals and helped the club win the Europa League.

He also captained Belgium at the 2026 World Cup, where Belgium reached the quarter-finals.

Despite those achievements, Sheringham believes Manchester United should have aimed higher.

“Manchester United have already lost their chance to acquire the additional midfielder they required, as all the top players have already been signed,” Sheringham told MetBonus, via Metro.

“To secure the best talent, one must be willing to invest. History has shown this. Reflect on Sir Alex Ferguson’s era; he was willing to spend significantly to recruit top young players who would set the standard.”

Sheringham’s criticism centres less on Tielemans’ technical ability and more on whether the Belgian can become a transformative figure in a squad attempting to regain its former stature.

“Will Youri Tielemans set an example, or will he simply join United to enjoy the experience, content to be part of the team?” Sheringham asked.

“No. He will not alter the perception of the club or demand higher standards to restore them to greatness. He will only maintain the status quo, which is insufficient for a club of Manchester United’s stature.”

The assessment presents a sharp contrast with the reasoning behind Manchester United’s recruitment of Tielemans.

The club describes the Belgian as an experienced, high-quality midfielder who has been playing at the highest level since breaking through at Anderlecht as a teenager.

Manchester United also highlighted his Premier League experience and recent success with Aston Villa.

Tielemans left Villa as a European champion after scoring the opening goal in the Europa League final against Freiburg.

Villa also noted that Tielemans had been named both Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign.

Tielemans himself arrived in Manchester with considerable ambition rather than simply looking for a final major move.

“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United. Signing for such a special club feels incredible,” Tielemans said after completing the transfer.

The midfielder’s arrival also forms part of a broader midfield rebuild under manager Michael Carrick.

Manchester United have been attempting to add greater depth and balance to the position following Casemiro’s departure, while the club continues to rebuild after several difficult seasons.

The transition has already produced renewed optimism.

Carrick guided Manchester United to third place last season and secured Champions League football, giving the club a more positive platform heading into the 2026/27 campaign.

Manchester United have nevertheless maintained a relatively cautious approach in the transfer market.

The £35m acquisition of Tielemans followed the £48m arrival of Santos, while the club has also been pursuing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba as it seeks further reinforcement in the middle of the pitch.

That context makes Sheringham’s intervention particularly significant.

His criticism is not simply a rejection of Tielemans as a footballer, but a broader challenge to whether Manchester United are recruiting players capable of matching the enormous expectations attached to the club.

For Tielemans, however, the opportunity is now clear.

His experience, leadership and Premier League pedigree give him a platform to answer the criticism on the pitch.

The coming months will determine whether Sheringham’s Tielemans verdict becomes a prescient warning or an unnecessarily severe judgement on a player yet to make his competitive mark at Old Trafford.
