Tegbe secures Chinese commitment to Nigeria power sector

Power minister Joseph Tegbe pressed Sinomach, CMEC and CNEEC in Beijing for faster Presidential Power Initiative delivery, co-investment and transmission equipment ready for shipment.

Nigeria’s Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe said talks in Beijing with Chinese engineering firms and financiers had produced commitments to speed up Presidential Power Initiative projects and widen Chinese roles across the Nigeria power sector, from generation and transmission to finance and manufacturing.

Joseph Tegbe, whose media aide Adeola Labzy issued the account, met Sinomach Group and China Machinery Engineering Corporation, two large contractors already on Nigerian generation and transmission work.

He asked for firm, faster completion dates on live PPI jobs and for a move beyond standard engineering, procurement and construction contracts.

Under that wider model, Chinese partners would put in capital and technology as co-investors in generation, transmission, hydropower and related industry.

He also visited China National Electric Engineering Corporation to push EPC work on the transmission grid, the part of the system where bottlenecks most often become load-shedding.

The Nigerian team watched a factory acceptance test of high-voltage cables and related materials at Hengfei Cable’s Changsha Industrial Park, a check meant to confirm equipment standards before shipment and cut delays after arrival.

Joseph Tegbe invited Chinese firms into steel, vehicle manufacturing, data centres, digital infrastructure, cold-chain logistics and sugar processing, arguing that new megawatts only pay if factories and other heavy users are there to buy the power.

He proposed a Nigeria–China industrial platform to screen bankable projects so new lines and plants match real demand.

The ministry framed success as megawatts delivered, kilometres of line energised and hours of supply, not signed communiqués. CMEC already has a footprint in Nigeria. What remains unstated in the release is how much extra capacity, which PPI sites will finish first, and on what financing terms.

Those details will decide whether the Beijing round becomes power in homes and industry or another set of partnership language.
