Ferran Torres scores extra-time winner as Spain dethrone Argentina to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a gripping fina

Spain claimed their second Spain FIFA World Cup title on Sunday after substitute Ferran Torres scored a dramatic extra-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium in the United States.

The triumph ended a 16-year wait for another world crown following Spain’s maiden success in South Africa in 2010 and capped an outstanding tournament for Luis de la Fuente’s side, who combined disciplined defending with their trademark possession-based football throughout the competition.

Spain dominated much of the contest but found Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez in inspired form, with the Aston Villa shot-stopper producing a series of superb saves to keep the score level during normal time.

The turning point arrived deep into second-half stoppage time when Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card following a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsí, forcing the reigning champions to play the remainder of the final with 10 men.

Spain eventually made their numerical advantage count in the 106th minute. Nico Williams reacted quickly to keep the attack alive before setting up Torres, who fired emphatically past Martínez to spark jubilant celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.

The victory completed a remarkable campaign for De la Fuente’s men, who conceded just one goal across seven matches and reinforced their status as one of international football’s dominant forces following their UEFA European Championship success in 2024.

Argentina, captained by Lionel Messi, entered the final hoping to retain the trophy won in Qatar four years earlier. Lionel Scaloni’s side had shown resilience throughout the knockout rounds, including victories over Egypt and England, but struggled to break down Spain’s organised defence in the final.

Speaking after the match, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his players for delivering on the biggest stage.

“We are world champions. This team never stopped believing and fully deserved this success,” he said after the final.

For Messi, the defeat is widely expected to mark the end of an extraordinary World Cup journey.

The 39-year-old leaves the tournament as one of its greatest players after inspiring Argentina to the 2022 title and guiding the Albiceleste to consecutive World Cup finals.

Spain’s latest triumph places the country alongside football’s multiple-time world champions and underlines the remarkable resurgence of a national team that has successfully blended experienced leaders with a new generation of gifted talent.

Ferran Torres’ decisive strike will be remembered as the moment that restored La Roja to the summit of world football and sealed a historic victory in one of the most fiercely contested World Cup finals in recent memory.
