Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has reaffirmed the cordial relationship between his family and that of former Anambra governor and former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Gregory Obi, confirming in an interview in Anambra State on Monday, November 2, 2026, that Obi’s wife, Mrs Margaret Obi, is the baptismal godmother of one of his daughters, while his own wife, Dr Nonye Soludo, serves as the confirmation godmother to Obi’s daughter.
The clarification comes weeks after a public disagreement over the nature of the godparent relationship between the two families generated widespread attention, with conflicting interpretations of remarks made by Obi and subsequent explanations from the Anambra State Government.

Speaking during an interview with BBC News Igbo, Soludo described Obi as a close personal friend and maintained that their political disagreements had not affected the relationship between their families.
“Peter Obi and I are good friends. Our two families are on good terms. His wife was the godmother of my child at baptism, and my wife was the godmother of his child at confirmation,” the governor said.
Soludo’s remarks provided a clearer account of the family connection, distinguishing between baptismal and confirmation godparenthood, two separate roles within Catholic tradition.
The governor also explained that his differences with Obi were primarily political, particularly regarding their preferred candidates and visions for the leadership of Anambra State.
According to Soludo, political competition should not automatically be interpreted as a personal disagreement, even when prominent individuals support opposing candidates.
“I have a different vision of who should be governor of Anambra State. I am contesting, and he supported whoever he felt should be governor. I prevailed by the grace of God, and I don’t hold it against him,” he said.
The clarification revisits an exchange that attracted public attention in September 2026, when Obi spoke at the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ 22nd Conference in Enugu.
During the gathering, the former Anambra governor had referred to his relationship with Soludo while dismissing suggestions that the two men were engaged in a personal feud.
Obi said he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children, using the family connection to emphasise the closeness between them.
“My wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children. Yes, we are that close. We are not quarrelling, and we will never quarrel,” Obi had said.
However, the remarks prompted a clarification from the office of Anambra’s First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, the following day.
Her media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe, disputed the suggestion that Obi personally served as godfather to any of the governor’s children.
Ezeigwe explained that Mrs Margaret Obi was the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters, while Dr Nonye Soludo was the confirmation godmother to Obi’s daughter.
He further clarified that neither Peter Obi nor Chukwuma Soludo had personally served as godparent to the other’s children.
The statement suggested that Obi might have misspoken while addressing the conference, adding that the clarification was necessary to prevent further misunderstanding.
Soludo’s latest comments are consistent with that earlier explanation and reinforce the distinction between the roles played by the two political families.
The development comes against the background of disagreements between the two men over Anambra’s political direction and the financial record of Obi’s administration, which ended in 2014.
In September, the relationship came under renewed scrutiny following a dispute over claims by officials of the Soludo administration that the state was still servicing loans and other financial obligations incurred by previous administrations.
Obi rejected suggestions that his administration left the state in debt, maintaining that he handed over substantial financial savings.
The disagreement generated further exchanges between supporters of both politicians and officials of the Anambra State Government.
Despite the public differences, both men have previously made statements suggesting that their political disagreements should not be confused with personal hostility.
Soludo also maintained that his political position should not prevent him from recognising Obi’s right to support candidates whose aspirations align with his own convictions.
The latest interview therefore offers a further glimpse into the relationship between two influential political figures whose careers and public disagreements continue to attract attention in Anambra and beyond.
For residents of the state, the clarification also provides context to a discussion that had increasingly moved beyond political disagreements to questions about the personal relationship between the former and current governors.
Soludo’s message was that political differences could exist alongside personal friendship and family connections, without necessarily resulting in a permanent breakdown in relations.

The governor’s remarks may help settle questions about the godparent relationship that emerged in September, although the wider political differences between the two men remain.
