International Chess Federation operational manager and delegate Sergei Indeikin, aged 36, died in the Russian city of Perm in late August 2026 after contracting a severe form of malaria during a work trip to Abuja, Nigeria.
Indeikin had travelled to the Nigerian capital earlier that month to serve as FIDE’s official representative at the World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, which ran from 1 to 8 August. Federation reports from the event confirmed his presence among the organising officials.

After the tournament concluded he continued to Uzbekistan for further work commitments. It was there that he first began to feel unwell.
He then returned via Moscow to Perm, where his condition rapidly worsened. An ambulance was called and he was admitted to hospital, but medical staff were unable to save him.
The International Chess Federation announced his death on 23 August, stating only that he had died following a “sudden illness.” Russian media, drawing on accounts from his family, later reported that the cause was severe malaria believed to have been transmitted by a mosquito bite while he was in Nigeria.
His mother, Tatiana Indeikina, told reporters the illness had progressed with alarming speed. “It was a very rapidly progressing illness. The most severe form,” she said.
She added that her son had become infected while working and that the disease had developed over roughly two weeks.
His father, Alexander Indeikin, said the symptoms described to him by his son’s FIDE colleagues pointed clearly to malaria contracted in Nigeria.
He noted that Sergei had been vaccinated before the trip, travelling specially to Moscow for the inoculation, though such protection is known to reduce severity rather than guarantee complete immunity.
Professor Alexander Lukashev, a specialist in tropical diseases, confirmed that malaria can readily be acquired through the bite of an infected mosquito in Nigeria and other tropical regions.
While some medical voices have cautioned that an official diagnosis has not been publicly released by treating doctors, the family and several Russian outlets remain convinced of the link to the Nigerian journey.
Indeikin had worked on FIDE events since 2021 and quickly became an integral member of the operations team.
He helped organise some of the organisation’s most high-profile competitions, including World Championship matches, World Cups, Candidates tournaments and World Rapid and Blitz Championships.
Colleagues remembered him as a reliable professional who travelled extensively to ensure events ran smoothly and to the highest standards.
Beyond his professional duties he was also known for quiet generosity. He supported an orphanage and made a habit of bringing chess memorabilia and small gifts for the children from the many countries his work took him to.
He is survived by his wife and young daughter. FIDE paid tribute to him as a true professional, a reliable colleague and a kind person who contributed enormously to its work, extending deepest condolences to his family.

The case has drawn attention once more to the risks faced by travellers in malaria-endemic areas of sub-Saharan Africa, even among those who take recommended precautions.
