Lagos governor headlines Freedom Online’s seventh annual lecture

Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu will deliver Freedom Online newspaper’s seventh annual lecture on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the Sheraton Lagos Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, bringing political leaders, media figures and other stakeholders together to examine Nigeria’s 2027 elections, economic outlook, security challenges and wider national future.

The lecture, titled “2027 Elections, Economy, Security and Nigeria’s Future”, comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections and concerns over insecurity and economic pressures remain prominent in national debate.

Former Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed will chair the event, while former Ogun State Governor and serving Ogun East Senator Gbenga Daniel will attend as Special Guest of Honour.

Eze Anaba, President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Editor of Vanguard, will serve as Chief Host.

Freedom Online Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief Gabriel Akinadewo announced the lineup and said other prominent Nigerians are expected to attend.

The forum is expected to explore how Nigeria can approach the 2027 elections amid concerns about security, economic hardship and the credibility of the electoral process.

Akinadewo said insecurity would receive particular attention because of its potential effect on political participation, economic activity and social stability.

He also raised questions about the country’s direction after the 2027 polls and whether the election can produce an outcome broadly accepted by Nigerians and political stakeholders.

The organisers’ decision to place elections, the economy and security within a single conversation reflects the close relationship between the three issues.

Insecurity can restrict movement and economic activity while also creating challenges for political campaigns and voting.

At the same time, economic conditions are likely to influence how voters assess political parties and candidates as the 2027 contest approaches.

The credibility and acceptance of the election will also depend on the conduct of politicians, security agencies, electoral officials and voters before, during and after polling.

The organisers have therefore positioned the lecture as an opportunity to consider not only who may win the 2027 election, but also the conditions required for a peaceful and credible democratic process.

Sanwo-Olu’s participation gives the event an additional political dimension.

The Lagos governor has previously spoken publicly about democratic governance, media responsibility and the need for credible elections.

In July, Sanwo-Olu was represented at the Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture in Lagos, where discussions focused on the media, the Independent National Electoral Commission, voters and the path towards credible elections ahead of 2027.

At that event, speakers including political scientist Professor Sylvester Akhaine called for stronger cooperation among the media, INEC and voters to improve the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.

The issues expected at Thursday’s lecture therefore build on an already active national conversation about the country’s democratic future.

The Freedom Online lecture also has a history of bringing political and public figures together to examine major national questions.

Sanwo-Olu previously delivered the publication’s annual lecture in 2020, while other past speakers have included former Abia Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, former Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi and Governors Hope Uzodimma of Imo and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was the Special Guest Speaker at the sixth edition in 2025.

This year’s gathering comes at a particularly important stage in Nigeria’s political calendar.

Political parties are already positioning candidates, building alliances and strengthening grassroots structures, while discussions over electoral credibility and security are becoming increasingly central to preparations for 2027.

For Lagos, the lecture also provides an opportunity for the state’s governor to contribute to a national discussion extending well beyond the state’s borders.

The presence of Lai Mohammed and Gbenga Daniel brings further political experience to the forum, while Anaba’s role adds a strong media perspective to discussions about elections and governance.

The event is ultimately expected to focus less on individual political campaigns and more on the conditions that could shape Nigeria’s next political chapter.

As the 2027 election approaches, questions surrounding security, economic opportunity, democratic participation and public confidence are likely to become increasingly important.

Freedom Online’s seventh annual lecture will provide a platform for those questions to be examined publicly, with Sanwo-Olu set to deliver the keynote address at an event designed to consider what Nigeria’s choices in 2027 could mean for the country’s future.
