Real Madrid defeat Manchester City 3–0 in the Champions League as Federico Valverde scores a brilliant hat-trick to give Madrid control of the tie

Real Madrid produced a commanding performance on Wednesday night to defeat Manchester City 3–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 playoff, with Federico Valverde scoring a remarkable hat-trick.

The Spanish side seized control of the match with an early breakthrough in the 20th minute. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a swift attacking move with a precise pass that released Federico Valverde behind the Manchester City defence.

The Uruguayan midfielder rounded the goalkeeper before calmly lifting the ball into the net to open the scoring.

Despite enjoying spells of possession, Manchester City struggled to create clear chances. Efforts from Bernardo Silva and Antoine Semenyo failed to trouble Real Madrid’s defence, while Thibaut Courtois remained alert whenever called upon.

Real Madrid doubled the lead in the 27th minute when Federico Valverde capitalised on a pass inside the penalty area and fired a clinical low strike into the right corner, leaving Manchester City with a mountain to climb.

The home side delivered another decisive blow before halftime. In the 42nd minute, Brahim Díaz set up Federico Valverde inside the box, and the midfielder finished from close range to complete a brilliant hat-trick and extend Real Madrid’s advantage to 3–0.

Manchester City attempted to respond after the break, with Jeremy Doku and Nico O’Reilly creating opportunities. However, Thibaut Courtois produced several important saves to keep the visitors at bay.

Real Madrid also had a chance to extend their lead when Vinícius Júnior was awarded a penalty after a foul by Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper redeemed himself by saving the Brazilian’s spot kick.

With the contest largely under control, Real Madrid comfortably protected the advantage until the final whistle, securing a powerful three-goal cushion ahead of the second leg.

The result leaves Real Madrid firmly in control of the tie, while Manchester City face a daunting task if they hope to overturn the deficit and keep their Champions League campaign alive.
