Peter Obi faces criticism for claiming President Bola Tinubu forged his certificate; multiple sources affirm Tinubu’s academic credentials
Peter Obi, presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has come under scrutiny after alleging that President Bola Tinubu “forged a certificate” and linking the claim to remarks reportedly made by former US President Donald Trump about Nigeria.

The statement was made on Saturday, February 14, 2026, during Obi’s ADC primary campaign launch in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State.
Critics have disputed Obi’s claims, noting that Trump’s remarks were reportedly influenced by lobbying efforts from separatist Biafra groups, and that the former US President later referred to Nigeria and its First Lady in a respectful context.
Regarding the certificate allegation, independent sources, including records from Chicago State University, indicate that Bola Tinubu, a Nigerian citizen, was admitted, attended, and graduated cum laude from the institution.
Media investigations, including a 2023 report by the British Broadcasting Corporation, corroborated Tinubu’s credentials.
Obi has also faced challenges over other statements, including claims about his educational background.
While he has said he studied at Harvard University, records show he participated in a short executive course lasting two weeks rather than a degree programme.
His only academic degree is a First Degree, Second Class Lower, in Philosophy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Critics further note that Obi’s tenure as Governor of Anambra State saw an increase in poverty, citing official statistics that indicate the poverty rate rose from 41.4% in 2003 to 53.7% by 2009.
Questions have also been raised over investment returns, including a $12.24 million investment in SABMiller that reportedly declined to $5.38 million.
