In a message addressed to young Nigerians, Obi referenced Nigeria’s absence at the 2026 World Cup and the global visibility of Nigerian talents and entertainers, including performances by Davido, Burna Boy and Rema at the tournament’s opening ceremony.
He also noted that many Nigerian-born footballers representing other countries, such as Germany’s Felix Nmecha, continue to make global impact, using the example to stress the need for national development and youth engagement.
Obi said the situation should serve as both a reminder and motivation for young Nigerians to take ownership of the country’s political future.
He emphasised that the youth population remains a decisive force in elections, noting that over 15 million Nigerians have attained voting age in the past three years.
Obi urged young people to move beyond political scepticism and organise themselves within communities, schools, workplaces, and religious centres to demand accountability and participate actively in governance.
“You do not need to belong to any party or wait for anyone to organise you,” he said.
“Organise yourselves in your streets, campuses, communities, workplaces, churches, mosques, and social groups. Mobilise, debate, demand accountability, and take part in choosing those you wish to entrust with leadership.”
He also said he is open to engaging youths directly if invited, where he would share his vision for national development.
Obi urged young Nigerians not to remain passive, stressing that their votes remain critical in shaping the country’s future leadership.
“My young friends, this is your country. Take it back,” he added.
