I don’t know who is funding the NDC — Peter Obi

The NDC presidential candidate insists he has never asked anyone to raise campaign funds and says he would quit the race if proven to have taken public money.

Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he does not know who is funding the party, maintaining that he has never directed anyone to raise money on his behalf and would rather abandon his presidential ambition than engage in corrupt financing.

Obi made the remarks during an interview while responding to questions about the financial structure of the NDC ahead of the 2027 general election. The former Anambra State governor said the party’s activities have largely been sustained by volunteers and Nigerians who believe in its vision rather than by a single financier.

“I don’t know who is funding the NDC,” Obi said, adding that he had not authorised anyone to solicit funds for his campaign.

The presidential hopeful stressed that transparency would remain a core principle of his campaign, insisting that anyone with evidence showing he had received illicit public funds should make it public.

He declared that he would immediately withdraw from the presidential race if anyone proved he had stolen government money or benefited from corrupt public resources.

Obi also argued that Nigeria has sufficient human and natural resources to solve many of its challenges, blaming corruption, poor governance and the misuse of public funds for the country’s economic difficulties.

His comments come as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with campaign financing emerging as one of the major issues attracting public scrutiny.

Obi is contesting the 2027 election on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, following the collapse of earlier opposition coalition efforts that had sought to produce a single presidential candidate.

The NDC candidate has repeatedly pledged to run what he describes as an accountable and transparent campaign, saying public trust can only be earned through integrity in both fundraising and governance.
