Peter Obi defamation suit filed against Kenneth Okonkwo over alleged defamatory statements and claims made against the former presidential candidate

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has initiated legal proceedings against actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over alleged defamatory statements made against him.

The lawsuit follows a series of public comments and allegations which Obi’s legal team reportedly considers false, damaging and injurious to his reputation.

According to documents filed before the court, Obi is seeking legal redress over claims he believes were deliberately circulated to mislead the public and tarnish his standing.

The former Anambra State governor contends that the statements in question were untrue and amounted to defamation, prompting him to seek judicial intervention.

The dispute marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two prominent political figures, who were once allies within the Labour Party movement that gained national prominence during the 2023 presidential election.

Sources familiar with the matter said Obi’s legal action seeks to challenge what he describes as persistent falsehoods and misleading narratives allegedly propagated against him.

Neither Obi nor Okonkwo had publicly disclosed full details of the claims at the centre of the legal dispute as of the time of filing this report.

Legal observers note that the case could attract considerable public and political interest given the profiles of the parties involved and their previous political association.

The court is expected to determine whether the statements complained of constitute defamation under Nigerian law and whether any damages or other remedies should be awarded if the claims are upheld.Peter Obi, Kenneth Okonkwo, Defamation Lawsuit, Labour Party, Nigerian Politics
