Hills Emmanuel, a Ghanaian-Nigerian pastor and founder of The Wonderful Grace of God Evangelical Ministry in Bokkos, Plateau State, was found dead on Saturday, August 29, 2026, after being abducted alongside another cleric on the Barkin Ladi-Bokkos road, as at least four other people were reportedly killed in separate attacks across Plateau State.

The reported violence unfolded between Friday night, August 28, and the early hours of Saturday across communities in Bokkos, Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Mangu local government areas.

Accounts from conflict reporter Masara Kim Usman and other sources described five separate incidents, with one person also reported injured.

Emmanuel, a former pastor with Dunamis Church, was travelling from Jos to Bokkos with Pastor Gabriel Joseph Dipak of Christ Apostolic Church when armed men reportedly stopped their commercial minibus along the Barkin Ladi-Bokkos road.

Security reporting independently confirmed that gunmen blocked the road at about 8:40pm on Friday and abducted two passengers.

Troops from Operation Enduring Peace were deployed after a distress call and began searching the surrounding area.

Witnesses cited in subsequent reports said the vehicle was carrying nine passengers and that the attackers took the two pastors from the vehicle.

The other passengers were reportedly robbed of cash and mobile phones before being released.

Emmanuel’s body was discovered early on Saturday near the location of the abduction. Dipak, however, remained missing, with reports indicating that his family had been contacted by the abductors. The reported ransom demand, if any, had not been established.

The killings extended beyond the highway.

A woman was reportedly killed in Fang village in Riyom Local Government Area, while two people were killed in Radura village in Barkin Ladi. Another person was reported injured in Chakfem village in Mangu Local Government Area.

The incidents have been described by local sources as connected attacks, although authorities have not publicly established that a single group was responsible for all of them.

Reports citing witnesses have described the attackers as suspected Fulani militants.

That attribution has not been independently verified, and it would be premature to treat the identity or motive of the perpetrators as established fact.

The reported attacks come against a backdrop of persistent insecurity in Plateau, particularly across Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Mangu, where communities have repeatedly faced killings, abductions, displacement and clashes involving farmers, herders and armed groups.

The security situation was already under pressure on the same night. Plateau police said separately that officers operating in Barkin Ladi recovered a General Purpose Machine Gun and an AK-47 rifle after suspected bandits fled into the surrounding forest when police approached.

The operation followed intelligence about suspected armed criminals operating around Kafi Abu.

The recovery illustrates the scale of the security challenge facing authorities in the area, where armed groups continue to exploit rural terrain and vulnerable road corridors.

For residents, the latest violence has revived fears over movement between communities and the safety of travellers using the Bokkos-Barkin Ladi route.

The reported abduction of two passengers also highlights the vulnerability of commuters even along routes where security checkpoints are present.

Emmanuel’s death has added a personal dimension to the latest violence. His ministry in Bokkos had made him a recognised figure within the local Christian community, while his earlier service with Dunamis Church had given him a wider religious profile.

The death of the pastor and the reported killings elsewhere have also renewed concerns about the recurring cycle of violence in Plateau’s Middle Belt communities.

Previous waves of attacks in the state have produced substantial civilian casualties and displacement, while authorities and community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger security measures and dialogue.

The immediate concern, however, remains the whereabouts of Pastor Gabriel Joseph Dipak and the identification of those responsible for the latest attacks.

Security forces have continued search and surveillance operations along the affected routes and surrounding communities.

The circumstances surrounding Emmanuel’s death, the identity of the attackers and whether the separate incidents were connected will ultimately depend on the outcome of ongoing investigations.

For Plateau communities already accustomed to the uncertainty of travelling after dark, the latest violence is another painful reminder that the region’s security challenge remains far from resolved.
