Oyo Police Arrest Ibadan Murder Suspect following the alleged killing of a six-year-old girl in Ibadan as investigation intensifies
The Oyo State Police Command, led by Commissioner Abimbola Olugbenga, on April 11, 2026, in Ibadan, Oyo State, arrested a 23-year-old suspect, Sodiq Kayode Akorede, over the alleged killing of a six-year-old girl, Mutiyatu Sunday, in a case that has triggered widespread shock and concern across the state.

Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday, stating that the suspect was taken into custody after intelligence reports linked him to the discovery of the victim’s remains in Adigun Village, Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ibadan.
According to the police statement, operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene following a distress report, where they recovered critical evidence and arrested the suspect despite resistance from an irate crowd.
The command noted that officers acted with restraint to prevent further escalation while securing the scene.
Ayanlade stated that preliminary findings indicated the suspect was allegedly found in possession of the victim’s severed head, prompting immediate intervention by security operatives.
He further disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime, while investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police also confirmed that the suspect sustained injuries during an attempted mob attack before officers rescued him and moved him to a medical facility for treatment.
He is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation and prosecution.
Commissioner Abimbola Olugbenga condemned the incident and issued a strong warning against jungle justice, stressing that such actions undermine due process and could jeopardise ongoing investigations.
He urged residents to remain law-abiding and to report suspicious activities to security agencies rather than resorting to unlawful retaliation.
