The Nigeria Police Force, through Force Public Relations Officer Chief Superintendent of Police Ani Iniedu, has confirmed an investigation into the Osogbo church killing after an unidentified woman was found dead on church premises in the Obelewo area of Osogbo, Osun State, on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The discovery has prompted detectives from the Osun State Police Command’s Criminal Investigation Department to begin inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

CSP Ani Iniedu disclosed the development on Sunday while providing an update on police operations across the country.
According to Iniedu, police detectives visited the scene after the woman’s lifeless body was discovered inside the church premises.
“Police detectives visited the scene where the lifeless body of an unidentified female was found inside a church premises at Obelewo Area, Osogbo,” Iniedu said.
The police spokesman said preliminary findings indicated that the woman had been killed and that her left wrist had been severed and taken away by unidentified persons.
The circumstances surrounding the killing, including the identity of the victim, the motive and the identity of those responsible, remain unclear.
Police have not publicly linked any individual or group to the incident, and no arrest was announced in the update released on Sunday.
The victim’s body was subsequently deposited at a hospital mortuary for autopsy, a procedure expected to assist investigators in establishing the precise cause and circumstances of death.
The Osun State Police Command’s Criminal Investigation Department is handling the case.
The development adds to the broader security concerns surrounding violent crime investigations in Osun, where police have previously dealt with serious cases involving attacks and severe bodily injuries.
In 2020, for example, police arrested two men in connection with an attack in Modakeke, Osun State, in which a man’s left wrist was severed during an alleged dispute. The suspects were subsequently arraigned on charges including conspiracy and attempted murder.
The earlier case, however, involved an identified victim who survived the attack and was taken to hospital, making the circumstances materially different from the current incident.
The latest case has also drawn attention because the discovery occurred within church premises, although there is currently no evidence from the police statement suggesting that the church or its members were involved in the killing.
Investigators are expected to examine the scene, establish the victim’s identity, trace her movements before her death and determine how and when she arrived at the location.
The autopsy could provide further evidence as detectives work to establish a clearer timeline.
For residents of Obelewo and the wider Osogbo community, the incident is likely to raise difficult questions about how the woman came to be at the premises and whether anyone saw or heard anything before the discovery.
Police have yet to disclose whether surveillance footage, witnesses or other forensic evidence has been recovered from the scene.
The Nigeria Police Force has increasingly emphasised intelligence-led investigations and inter-agency cooperation in tackling violent crime.
Recent nationwide operational updates have included arrests, weapons recoveries and the rescue of kidnapped victims, reflecting the wider security workload facing the force.
However, the Osogbo case remains at an early stage, and investigators have not disclosed a possible motive.
The unidentified status of the victim also means that one of the immediate priorities for detectives will be establishing who she was and notifying her family.
Until those steps are completed, significant details about the case remain unanswered.

For now, the police investigation continues, with the autopsy and further forensic inquiries expected to provide crucial evidence in what has become a grim and unsettling discovery in Osogbo.
