She said the two interventions would help address transportation challenges while creating more opportunities for women, youths, vulnerable groups and small-scale entrepreneurs.
“I am glad to be in Edo today after quite a long time for the commissioning of 50 compressed natural gas buses for the benefit of the people,” the First Lady said.
Under the empowerment programme, each of the 5,000 beneficiaries will receive ₦200,000 to support their businesses and strengthen their financial independence.
Mrs Tinubu urged the beneficiaries to use the funds productively and grow their businesses.
“I pray that the monies received will prosper in your hands and grow your businesses,” she said.
Earlier, Governor Okpebholo said the First Lady’s visit was more than a ceremonial engagement, describing it as evidence of the Federal Government’s support and concern for Edo residents.
“Your visit is not just a ceremonial engagement. It is a demonstration of care, compassion and our commitment to the growth of our people,” the governor said.
Okpebholo said the CNG buses would make public transportation more accessible and affordable while improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
He added that the ₦1 billion empowerment programme would provide beneficiaries with financial support to expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
The governor particularly highlighted the importance of supporting women, saying their economic empowerment could have a wider impact on families and communities.
“When you empower a woman, you strengthen a family, uplift a community and contribute to the prosperity of society,” he stated.
Okpebholo thanked President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and support, while reaffirming his loyalty to the President and the All Progressives Congress.
He also pledged that his administration would continue to pursue inclusive governance and development across Edo State.
