Youths under the aegis of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ogun West Senatorial District, on Saturday protested the delayed reconstruction of the Abeokuta–Olorunda–Imeko Road in Ogun State.
The protesters gathered along the Alamala axis of the expressway, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Good road is our right, not a privilege,” “Our road is a death trap – FG, save us” and “No good road, no progress.”
Speaking on behalf of the group, the council’s State Vice Chairman in Ogun West, Kehinde Olorunjubelo, urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to provide an update on the project and take concrete steps towards its implementation.
Olorunjubelo recalled that the governor, during the commissioning of the Afon Township Road in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area on 28 January 2026, directed the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure to prepare an estimate for the reconstruction of the road.
He lamented that months after the directive, the road had deteriorated further, making journeys difficult for commuters and increasing transportation costs, vehicle maintenance expenses and safety risks.
The youth leader called on both the state and Federal Governments to intervene urgently by assessing the road, addressing its most dangerous sections and providing a clear timeline for rehabilitation and reconstruction.
He also stressed the need for proper drainage systems and erosion-control measures to prevent further damage.
Olorunjubelo maintained that the protest was not politically motivated but driven by the hardship experienced by communities that depend on the road for transportation, commercial activities, education and access to essential services.
He urged the authorities to communicate the project’s current status, outline the steps being taken and provide an expected completion timeline.
