Ogun students block expressway after colleague is killed in robbery attack

Students of DS Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State, blocked the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, after an armed robbery attack in Eruku Community claimed the life of a fellow student and left three others injured.

The protest, which disrupted traffic along the busy highway, was driven by concerns over repeated security challenges around the institution and surrounding student communities.

The students demanded urgent intervention from the Ogun State Government, security agencies and community leaders following the overnight attack, which occurred in an area where many students of the polytechnic live.

Rector of DS Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Dr Goke Rafiu, confirmed that suspected armed robbers invaded about 15 houses in Eruku during the early hours of Tuesday.

Dr Rafiu said one student was killed during the attack, while three others sustained injuries and required medical attention.

“What happened was that some armed robbers raided about 15 houses in Eruku where some of our students are living. The community is actually behind the school, and during the attack, one of the students was killed while about three others were injured,” he said.

The rector added that one of the injured students was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, for treatment.

He said the institution’s management was working with police officers, community representatives and other stakeholders to restore calm and improve security around the area.

“We are currently in the community with police officers and members of the institution’s management team, including the Chairman of the Governing Council, Ambassador Toye Okanlawon, to chart the way forward,” Rafiu added.

The attack also affected the academic calendar of the institution, as examinations scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29, were postponed.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Timetable, Examination and Academic Calendar Committee, Gideon Adekunle, the polytechnic said the decision was taken to allow students affected by the incident regain emotional stability and to honour the deceased.

The institution announced that the postponed examinations would resume on Friday, July 30, 2026, with a new timetable to be communicated.

Students’ Union Government President, Comrade Owoigbe Blessing, said the attackers struck around midnight and described the situation as another reminder of the security concerns facing students in the community.

She disclosed that the deceased student was a final-year HND II student, while another female student suffered serious injuries during the attack. Another student who sustained gunshot wounds was taken to the Federal Medical Centre for treatment.

Blessing urged authorities to take stronger security measures around the polytechnic, saying similar incidents had occurred in Eruku Community.

“There is no adequate security. If there was, this would not have happened. This is not the first, second or even third time such an incident has occurred in Eruku,” she said.

The Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students in Ogun State, Comrade Olabode Faruq Success, also condemned the attack and called for swift measures to protect students across tertiary institutions in the state.

The incident adds to wider concerns about the safety of students living off-campus, with education stakeholders repeatedly calling for stronger collaboration between schools, security agencies and host communities.
