The lone crash occurred on Sunday night when a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the bridge, trapping all occupants inside the vehicle.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Odunsi Afolabi, Ogunjobi said emergency responders from the FRSC Itori Unit were immediately deployed to the scene following reports of the incident.
Ogunjobi disclosed that all 11 occupants of the vehicle, comprising 10 adult men and one adult woman, died in the crash.
According to the FRSC commander, the impact of the accident locked the vehicle’s doors, preventing the victims from escaping.
“The gold Toyota somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact,” Ogunjobi stated.
FRSC officials, assisted by members of the local community, carried out a difficult recovery operation by dismantling parts of the vehicle to retrieve the bodies.
The remains of the victims were later deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
Ogunjobi attributed the fatal crash to suspected driving under the influence and overloading, warning motorists against reckless behaviour on highways.
The FRSC commander also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged road users travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor to exercise extreme caution, particularly during night journeys.
