Nurse remanded NYSC member death as court orders detention over alleged unlawful abortion that led to corps member’s fatality in Ogun State

A Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, on Thursday remanded 37-year-old nurse Kehinde Adesanya for 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre over the alleged unlawful abortion that resulted in the death of 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

The court, presided over by Magistrate O.O. Sam-Obaleye, granted the application of the police to detain the defendant pending legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecution, in a case that has drawn intense public concern.

Police counsel, Solomon Babalola, told the court that the offences occurred between January and March 2026 at Ikereku area in Laderin, Abeokuta. He alleged that drugs supplied by the defendant led to the fatal outcome.

According to the charge sheet, Adesanya is facing four counts bordering on conspiracy, supplying drugs for unlawful abortion, and murder under relevant provisions of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

The prosecution maintained that the actions of the defendant culminated in the death of Ariyo, a development described by observers as a deeply troubling case within the state’s health and legal landscape.

The Nurse remanded NYSC member death case also drew attention to a related proceeding involving Abass Olalekan, identified as the NYSC Inspector of Abeokuta South Local Government.

Olalekan was earlier arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000.

In court, the magistrate ruled that the gravity of the allegations required further legal scrutiny, ordering that Adesanya remain in custody while the prosecution completes its investigation and obtains formal legal advice.

The case has been adjourned to May 26, 2026, for further proceedings.

The incident has sparked renewed scrutiny of illegal medical practices and patient safety, with legal experts noting that the outcome could have far-reaching implications for professional accountability in the healthcare sector.
