The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has expressed optimism about a stronger Nigeria-Morocco sports partnership following diplomatic engagements with Morocco’s Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Moha Ou Ali Tagma, in Abuja, as preparations continue for the National Grassroots Sports Development Summit scheduled for November 18 and 19, 2026.
The proposed collaboration is expected to create opportunities for young Nigerian athletes through international sporting exchanges, improved training structures and greater exposure to established sporting development systems.

Adeboye said his recent visit to the Moroccan Embassy in Abuja formed part of ongoing efforts to establish strategic relationships that could strengthen Nigeria’s grassroots sports ecosystem.
The presidential aide also travelled to Morocco during the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to support Nigeria’s national youth team, the Flamingos.
He described Morocco’s sporting environment as a valuable reference point for Nigeria, particularly in infrastructure development, sustained investment and international collaboration.
The visit comes at a significant moment for Nigerian women’s youth football.
The Flamingos reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after defeating Mexico in the round of 16 on October 29, 2026.
The achievement provided another opportunity to showcase the country’s emerging football talent on the international stage.
Reflecting on the diplomatic engagement, Adeboye described his meeting with the Moroccan ambassador as productive, expressing confidence that further discussions involving senior Moroccan sports officials could establish a stronger foundation for cooperation.
“Our recent meeting with the Moroccan Ambassador to Nigeria was very productive, and my visit to Morocco has further strengthened my belief in what we can achieve through international sporting partnerships.
We are looking forward to engagements involving top Moroccan sports officials, including the sports minister, as we explore opportunities that will benefit young Nigerian athletes,” Adeboye stated.
The proposed areas of cooperation include talent identification, coaching exchanges, sports infrastructure development, youth competitions and international exposure.
Adeboye, however, stressed that the objective was to move beyond diplomatic engagements towards practical arrangements that would create measurable opportunities for young people across the country.
“We do not want international relationships that end with courtesy visits and photographs. Our focus is on partnerships that will create real opportunities for talented boys and girls across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas,” he added.
The proposed Nigeria-Morocco sports partnership is expected to feature among the broader international development conversations at the forthcoming National Grassroots Sports Development Summit 2026.
Scheduled to hold at the Banquet Hall, State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja, the two-day gathering will be organised under the theme, “Creating a New Pathway for Sustainable Grassroots Sports Development.”
The summit is expected to bring together government representatives, sports administrators, development partners, private-sector organisations, coaches and other stakeholders to examine practical approaches to strengthening sports development from the community level.
Its discussions will centre on five strategic pillars: Participation, Talent Development, Infrastructure, Sports Economy and International Pathways.
The five areas reflect an approach that seeks to connect wider participation in sports with structured talent development, improved facilities, investment opportunities and access to international sporting platforms.
In a related development, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has been confirmed as the summit’s technical partner.
The organisation is expected to contribute its expertise in policy dialogue, economic planning and stakeholder engagement towards developing a workable framework for sustainable grassroots sports development.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is listed as the Special Guest of Honour for the opening ceremony on November 18, while former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.
Other expected participants include senior representatives of the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, the Nigeria Olympic Committee and UNESCO.
The second day, November 19, is expected to feature further stakeholder engagements aimed at developing actionable recommendations for the country’s grassroots sports framework.
The summit forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to strengthen the foundation of Nigerian sports by creating more coordinated pathways for discovering and nurturing young talents.
For Adeboye, the emphasis is on ensuring that opportunities extend beyond established sporting centres to young athletes in communities across the country.
He described November 18 and 19 as important dates for the future of Nigerian sports, noting that the gathering should produce practical solutions and lasting partnerships rather than remain a platform for discussions alone.
The Senior Special Assistant reaffirmed his commitment to advancing President Tinubu’s youth development agenda through sports, while calling on government institutions, sports federations, state and local governments, private-sector organisations and other stakeholders to support the summit.

While the proposed Nigeria-Morocco collaboration presents an encouraging opportunity for international engagement, its long-term value will depend on translating diplomatic discussions into structured programmes, sustained investment and accessible development opportunities for young Nigerian athletes.
