Peter Obi raises red flag over Nigeria’s democratic crisis

The NDC presidential candidate says electoral, judicial and political practices are eroding democratic institutions and could burden future generations.

Peter Obi raises red flag over Nigeria’s democratic crisis

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in Bauchi State, warned that Nigeria is facing a deepening democracy crisis, citing alleged electoral manipulation, declining institutional independence and growing tolerance for practices that weaken democratic principles.

Obi made the remarks at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue, where political leaders, constitutional experts and civil society voices gathered to examine the future of democracy in Africa.

The former governor reflected on his own experience challenging the 2003 Anambra State governorship election in court, recalling that the legal battle lasted three years and produced judgments in his favour from judges he said he had never previously met.

Obi said the experience demonstrated a level of institutional independence that he fears is becoming harder to find.

“I was in court for three years challenging my election, five judges that I never met for one day gave judgement in my favour,” Obi said.

He argued that the contrast between that experience and current political developments illustrates what he sees as a serious deterioration in Nigeria’s democratic safeguards.

Obi expressed particular concern about the role of educated professionals in electoral malpractice, as well as what he described as troubling conduct among politicians, lawyers, religious leaders and judicial officers.

“So, if you look at that and look at what is happening today in Nigeria where professors are now aiding illiterates to rig elections… We have a crisis,” he said.

The remarks came against a wider debate about the strength of Nigeria’s electoral and judicial institutions ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi also criticised the removal of forgery as an offence in electoral matters and questioned the willingness of prominent legal practitioners to defend politicians facing allegations of wrongdoing.

He extended his criticism to religious leaders, saying some had become willing to pray for politicians accused of criminal conduct, while expressing concern about the perceived independence of the judiciary.

The former governor’s intervention was not simply framed as an indictment of individual institutions.

Obi urged Nigerians to consider how the normalisation of such practices could affect the country’s long-term democratic culture.

“We need to reverse this because the abuse we are allowing today will take its revenge on our children,” he said.

His warning echoed a broader concern raised at the dialogue about whether African democratic systems are sufficiently adapted to the realities of the continent.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who chaired the event, criticised the winner-takes-all character of much of Africa’s political system and argued that the Western liberal model inherited by many African countries requires reconsideration.

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, whose foundation organised the dialogue, was also among the prominent figures at the gathering.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed hosted the event, which brought together stakeholders to discuss the theme, “Beyond elections, can political parties and the judiciary save African democracy?”

The focus on institutions comes at a significant point in Nigeria’s political cycle.

With parties already positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential election, concerns about electoral credibility, judicial independence and political accountability are likely to remain central to public debate.

Obi has previously argued that democratic reform must go beyond periodic elections.

In April 2026, he backed a Goodluck Jonathan Foundation report that called for changes to Nigeria’s leadership recruitment process, with competence and integrity placed at the centre of political selection.

Goodluck Jonathan Foundation’s broader work has also focused on strengthening democratic governance and development across West and Central Africa.

The foundation signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Development Programme in 2024 to promote sustainable peace, democratic governance and leadership development in the region.

The latest exchange therefore places Obi’s remarks within a continuing national conversation about how Nigeria can strengthen institutions rather than relying solely on individual officeholders.

His comments are also significant because they come from a politician preparing for another presidential contest.

Obi’s assessment of the country’s democratic health is consequently both a governance argument and part of a wider political debate over the direction Nigeria should take before 2027.

The Nigeria democracy crisis  described by Obi is ultimately a question of institutional trust: whether elections can command public confidence, whether courts can act independently and whether political actors can accept rules that apply equally to all.

For Obi, the cost of allowing those safeguards to weaken extends beyond the present generation.

The warning delivered in Bauchi was therefore framed as a call for Nigerians to resist the gradual acceptance of practices that undermine democratic standards before those practices become entrenched and passed on as the country’s political inheritance.
