The Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this in Abuja following a diplomatic meeting between the Permanent Secretary, Dunoma Ahmed, and South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Lesoli Machele.
The meeting was convened to address rising diplomatic concerns, including attacks on foreign nationals and growing tensions affecting bilateral relations between both countries.
Ebienfa stated that Nigeria strongly opposed violence against its citizens abroad, noting that recent developments had increased anxiety within the Nigerian community in South Africa.
He referenced the deaths of Matthew Ekpenyong and Kelvin Amaramiro, which were reportedly linked to assaults involving security personnel, describing the cases as deeply concerning.
The ministry called for a thorough and independent investigation into both incidents, urging South African authorities to provide timely updates and ensure access to relevant case documents, including autopsy reports.
It further demanded accountability in cases where misconduct is established, stressing that disciplinary and legal actions must follow confirmed violations.
Permanent Secretary Dunoma Ahmed welcomed public statements from South African authorities condemning attacks on foreign nationals but emphasised the need for practical enforcement on the ground.
He also called for stronger protection for Nigerians residing legally in South Africa, including safeguards against profiling, harassment, and unlawful detention.
Ahmed urged proactive steps to prevent incitement by groups linked to anti-foreigner sentiment, warning that failure to act could worsen tensions.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to bilateral early warning mechanisms, urging their immediate activation in response to emerging threats.
