Neymar World Cup injury setback: Brazil set recovery timeline as Neymar battles calf injury ahead of 2026 World Cup squad selection

Brazil national team medical staff in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have confirmed that forward Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior is facing a critical fitness race after suffering a grade two calf injury, casting serious doubt over his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s 2026 FIFA World Cup plans.

The Seleção star, who currently plays for Santos, underwent a series of medical examinations at the Granja Comary training base following concerns over his availability for upcoming warm-up fixtures.

Neymar World Cup injury setback has become a central concern for Brazil’s technical team, with officials now closely monitoring his recovery timeline ahead of squad selection decisions.

According to reports from Globo, the Brazilian Football Confederation, CBF, temporarily restricted access to a local diagnostic centre to ensure strict privacy during Neymar’s imaging scans.

Although Santos initially issued clearance on the player’s condition, further tests conducted by Brazil’s national team medical department confirmed a grade two muscular oedema in the calf region.

Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar provided an update on the situation, confirming that the forward remains under treatment and is expected to require two to three weeks of recovery before returning to full fitness.

“The athlete is continuing treatment, and the expectation is that he will be cleared in two to three weeks,” Lasmar stated.

The development places Neymar under mounting pressure as Brazil continue preparations for their World Cup campaign under new head coach Carlo Ancelotti, with selection decisions expected to intensify in the coming weeks.

Despite the setback, medical staff remain cautiously optimistic that the experienced forward could recover in time, although his participation in preparatory fixtures now appears uncertain.

The situation has added an element of tension within the Brazil camp, as the team weighs fitness risks against the forward’s undeniable experience and influence on the international stage.
