Meta imposes ₦14 WhatsApp charge on businesses

Meta Platforms, the parent company of WhatsApp, will impose a ₦14 WhatsApp charge on businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform in Nigeria from Thursday 1 October 2026, applying the fee to certain service and utility messages sent to Nigerian numbers.

Ordinary WhatsApp users in Nigeria will not pay a per-message fee and will continue to send personal chats and make calls as before.

The new cost falls on companies that use WhatsApp’s enterprise platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API, to handle customer communication at scale.

Banks, fintech firms, telecommunications operators, retailers and e-commerce platforms that send transaction alerts, order confirmations, support replies and product updates are among those most exposed.

Meta’s developer documentation is explicit. “Effective October 1, 2026, Meta will charge on a per-message basis for all service messages, consistent with how Meta charges for template messages. These messages have not been charged since November 1, 2024.” From the same date, Meta will also charge “on a per-message basis for utility messages sent in response to users (within an open 24-hour customer service window).” Those utility replies have not been charged since 1 July 2025.

Service messages are non-template replies sent after a customer starts a conversation.

Utility messages cover routine business traffic such as payment confirmations, account updates, order notices and delivery alerts. Marketing messages sit in a higher pricing band.

For Nigerian numbers, a chargeable utility or service message is reported at about $0.0101, or roughly ₦14 at an exchange rate of about ₦1,340 to the dollar. Marketing messages are reported at about $0.062, or around ₦84.

ThisDay reports that Meta has yet to publish a final October rate card, so businesses should wait for the confirmed figure.
Meta has said the rates due to take effect on 1 October will be announced by 1 September 2026 at the latest.

The ₦14 WhatsApp charge is therefore not a flat fee on every WhatsApp message. Billing follows Meta’s message categories and the recipient’s market.

Companies that reach the platform through Business Solution Providers may also pay extra provider fees on top of Meta’s own rate.

At volume, the arithmetic becomes substantial. A fintech sending 500,000 chargeable messages at $0.0101 each would face about $5,050 in Meta fees alone, or roughly ₦6.8 million at ₦1,340 to the dollar, before any third-party charges.

The October change is the next step in a longer shift. Meta dropped conversation-based pricing in July 2025 and began charging per message for business-initiated template traffic.

Service replies and some utility messages inside the 24-hour customer-service window stayed free. That window will remain, but those replies will no longer be free.

Meta has also warned providers and directly integrated businesses. “For any Solution Provider or directly-integrated businesses that does not have a payment method on file by September 30, 2026, Meta will stop delivering service messages as of when they become charged on October 1, 2026.”

The standard WhatsApp Business app remains separate from the Business Platform.

Meta’s documentation says messages sent through the ordinary Business app can stay free even after a firm has been onboarded to the Cloud API, depending on how the service is used.

Smaller traders using the app should not assume the enterprise tariff automatically applies to them.

For large Nigerian companies, WhatsApp has become a daily customer desk. People already live in the app.

Banks use it for alerts. Retailers use it for orders. Fintechs use it for support. A single ₦14 message looks small. Multiplied across hundreds of thousands of automated notices, it becomes a new line on the operating budget.

Personal conversations will not suddenly become paid. The cost is aimed at businesses using Meta’s dedicated commercial infrastructure.

As 1 October approaches, those firms will need to check volumes, categories and payment details if they want the channel to keep running without interruption.
