Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has challenged 19-year-old Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande to improve his finishing and decision-making in the final third, despite praising the winger’s contribution to the Spanish club’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, 18 October 2026.
Mourinho’s assessment, reported by Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, reflects the high expectations surrounding the young attacker, whose pace, movement and ability to create dangerous situations have made him an exciting prospect at Real Madrid.

“I am very happy with Diomande. He has a lot to work on, and he has many things he needs to improve. He needs to work on his finishing,” Mourinho said.
The Portuguese coach added: “He gets to a lot of dangerous positions, but he needs to learn to relax more and make a better decision in last touch.”
The comments came after Diomande played a significant role in Madrid’s victory over Sevilla, contributing to the attacking display before scoring a late goal of his own.
Kylian Mbappé struck twice, while Arda Güler also found the net as Madrid secured an important league win.
Diomande’s contribution illustrated both his growing influence and the areas Mourinho wants him to refine.
His ability to get into promising positions gives Madrid an additional attacking threat, but the manager’s remarks suggest that converting opportunities consistently and choosing the right action at decisive moments remain important parts of his development.
Born on 14 November 2006, Diomande joined Real Madrid from German side RB Leipzig in August 2026 on a contract running until June 2033.
The move followed a breakthrough 2025/26 campaign in which he registered 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances across all competitions, according to Bundesliga.com.
His performances in Germany earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award and attracted interest from leading European clubs before Madrid secured his signature.
The transition to one of football’s most demanding environments brings increased expectations, particularly for a young forward expected to contribute to a team competing for domestic and European honours.
Mourinho’s comments underline the distinction between possessing attacking potential and consistently delivering the decisive final action.
Diomande’s goal against Sevilla provides an encouraging response to that challenge, although one performance alone will not settle the question of consistency.
The priority will be to maintain his positive movement while improving his composure when chances arise.
Real Madrid now turn their attention to a demanding run of fixtures, including a Champions League meeting with RB Leipzig on Wednesday, 21 October, followed by the eagerly anticipated El Clásico against Barcelona.
For Diomande, Mourinho’s message is both an endorsement and a challenge.

The manager is satisfied with what the winger brings to the team, but expects further progress in the details that can turn promising attacking play into decisive performances.
