Smith, 38 at the time of her disappearance in December 2001, had told her family she was heading to a Kmart in Virginia for Christmas shopping but never returned.
Her sudden absence triggered an extensive search involving multiple agencies across North Carolina and Virginia, including the FBI.
Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page said Smith recently told authorities she left voluntarily due to “ongoing domestic issues.” He added that there were no documented reports of domestic incidents at the residence at the time, and officials emphasized there was no foul play involved in her departure.
Authorities located Smith last week at an undisclosed location in North Carolina after receiving a tip.
Her family has been notified, prompting a flood of emotions, particularly among her children.
One of Smith’s daughters shared on Facebook the mix of joy, anger, heartbreak, and confusion following her mother’s return.
She reflected on the pain caused by the long absence while also cherishing the positive memories of her mother’s love during her early years.
