A man has died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
South Yorkshire Police said emergency services were called to the park at about 1.35pm on Saturday, 10 October 2026, following reports that a man had climbed into the enclosure.
The tiger subsequently attacked the man, causing serious injuries. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s family has been notified and is being supported by specialist officers.
Police confirmed that the tiger was uninjured and remained in the enclosure. There was no wider risk to the public.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park later identified the animal as Altai, an Amur tiger that arrived at the park from Norway in 2025. In a statement, the park said Altai is “safe and well and will not be euthanised as a result of this incident.”
The park expressed its “thoughts and heartfelt sympathies” to the man’s family and said it would remain closed while staff affected by the events receive specialist support.
Witnesses reported seeing the man pacing near the enclosure while wearing headphones before climbing over barriers and entering the area. Some described him appearing to dance or pose for photographs shortly before the incident.
Authorities have not yet explained how or why the man entered the enclosure. An investigation is ongoing.
