Man city and Arsenal make bold deadline-day moves

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta are at the centre of a frantic Premier League transfer deadline day, as Manchester City pursue Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández and Arsenal explore a major deal for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez.

The Premier League summer transfer window is due to close at 10pm GMT, leaving clubs only hours to complete negotiations that could reshape their squads for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign.

For Manchester City, Fernández represents one of the most ambitious moves of the summer.

Chelsea are understood to value the Argentina international at around £120 million, although City have yet to match that valuation.

Reports indicate that discussions between the clubs have now become active as the deadline approaches.

The potential move would reunite Fernández with Maresca, who previously worked with the midfielder at Chelsea. Maresca is looking to strengthen a City midfield that has undergone significant change.

The departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico González and Tijjani Reijnders have left City with an obvious need for additional quality and depth in the middle of the pitch.

Rodri’s move to Barcelona in particular has created a sizeable gap in City’s midfield structure.

Fernández’s possible arrival would therefore be more than a headline-grabbing signing.

It would give City an established international midfielder capable of operating in a demanding possession-based system.

Chelsea, however, face their own dilemma.

Selling Fernández would bring a substantial fee into the club, but manager Xabi Alonso would need to ensure that his midfield is adequately strengthened before the window closes.

Chelsea have reportedly explored several replacement options, including Manu Koné, Alex Scott and Eduardo Camavinga, although the availability of suitable alternatives remains uncertain.

The situation has added urgency to the negotiations, with Chelsea understandably reluctant to lose a major midfielder without securing a replacement.

Across London, Arsenal are pursuing an equally significant move for Álvarez.

The Argentina striker is reportedly valued at around £128 million, a figure that would make the transfer one of the most expensive in Arsenal’s history.

Álvarez’s position at Atlético Madrid has become increasingly uncertain.

The striker has reportedly missed training sessions and was absent from Atlético’s recent victory over Sevilla, developments that have fuelled speculation about his future.

Arsenal’s interest is understandable. After winning the Premier League title, Arteta’s side are seeking to build a squad capable of sustaining another title challenge and competing across several competitions.

A forward of Álvarez’s calibre would give Arsenal another versatile attacking option and could represent a significant statement of intent as the club pursue consecutive English league titles.

There is, however, an important complication.

Álvarez reportedly favours a move to Barcelona, while Atlético have little enthusiasm for strengthening a direct La Liga rival. Arsenal could consequently become a more attractive option if the London club are prepared to meet Atlético’s substantial asking price.

The situation remains fluid, and a deal of that magnitude would require several moving parts to fall into place before the deadline.

Manchester City are also expected to complete another significant move, with Iliman Ndiaye reportedly set to join from Everton for around £65 million.

The 26-year-old Senegal international had attracted interest from Tottenham, but City appear to have moved ahead in the race for his signature.

Ndiaye would add another attacking dimension to a City squad undergoing considerable reconstruction following several notable departures.

While City and Arsenal dominate the deadline-day headlines, Liverpool have already made one of the window’s biggest statements by completing the signing of France international Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.

The deal is worth an initial £106 million, potentially rising to £123 million with add-ons, according to Sky Sports.

Barcola has signed a five-year contract at Anfield.

Reuters reported that the 23-year-old arrives after an impressive spell at PSG, where he contributed 39 goals and 37 assists in 152 appearances and helped the French club win consecutive Champions League titles.

The signing is particularly significant following Mohamed Salah’s departure and reflects new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola’s determination to reshape his attacking options.

Liverpool could still make further moves before the deadline, with Yankuba Minteh and Ismaïla Sarr among the players linked with the club.

The arrival of Barcola could also influence Cody Gakpo’s future, with Manchester City and Tottenham reportedly monitoring the Dutch forward.

The final hours of the window are also expected to produce movement elsewhere.

Jack Grealish is set to return to Everton on loan from Manchester City after impressing during his previous spell at Goodison Park before suffering a season-ending foot injury.

Everton are also closing in on United States international Folarin Balogun from Monaco in a deal reportedly worth around £40 million.

Tottenham are pursuing Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk on loan, while Arsenal’s young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri is expected to join Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan.

Newcastle United striker Nicolas Woltemade, meanwhile, is expected to join Juventus on loan.

The scale of the activity reflects just how much has changed in the Premier League transfer market.

Clubs are no longer simply filling gaps in their squads.

They are making sizeable financial commitments in an attempt to gain an advantage before the season settles into its decisive stages.

For City and Arsenal, however, the stakes are particularly high.

A Fernández deal would strengthen City’s midfield and provide Maresca with another elite option. An Álvarez move would give Arsenal a formidable attacking weapon as Arteta attempts to defend the Premier League title.

Whether either blockbuster transfer crosses the line before the clock strikes 10pm GMT remains the question hanging over an increasingly dramatic deadline day.
