A 55-year-old motorist escaped unhurt after a train struck his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos on Friday, October 9, 2026, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged and causing traffic congestion in the area.
The incident involved a train travelling towards Agege and a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

LASTMA officials, working alongside security personnel, rescued the driver and removed the wrecked vehicle from the railway tracks, allowing the train to continue its journey.
Despite the swift clearance of the tracks, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD area following the collision.
LASTMA said the damaged Honda was handed over to security personnel to facilitate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the traffic officials and security personnel for their prompt response, noting that their coordinated efforts helped manage the emergency and restore movement along the railway line.
Bakare-Oki stressed the importance of collaboration among relevant agencies when responding to emergencies involving railway crossings and adjoining roads.
He also urged motorists to remain vigilant when approaching railway crossings and areas designated for train movement.
The LASTMA general manager cautioned drivers against crossing railway tracks when a train is approaching or already in motion, warning that disregarding safety procedures could have devastating consequences.
He emphasised that motorists must prioritise safety and comply with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable collisions and protect human lives.
The agency reiterated its appeal to road users to observe railway safety guidelines and follow instructions from relevant authorities, particularly at busy crossings.
The Lagos train crash comes amid previous rail incidents in Nigeria that have raised concerns about passenger and railway safety.
In March, the Nigerian Railway Corporation announced that 26 passengers and crew members sustained varying degrees of injuries following a train incident along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor.
The corporation’s Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, said the incident occurred near Asham Station after a loud bang was heard as part of the train formation collided.
According to Opeifa, the Kaduna–Abuja service, identified as KA-2, departed Rigassa Station at 7:15 a.m. and arrived at Jere Station at 8:52 a.m., one minute ahead of schedule.

While the circumstances surrounding the Lagos collision remain subject to investigation, LASTMA has renewed its call for responsible driving and strict compliance with railway safety rules.
