Lagos seals Nordic Hotel over pollution scandal after officials confirm untreated wastewater discharge causing public nuisance and health risks

Lagos seals Nordic Hotel after the state government confirmed deliberate discharge of untreated wastewater into public drains, sparking outrage among residents and renewed debate over environmental compliance in the city.

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) sealed off the hotel, located at No. 258 Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, on Thursday following complaints from the public.

Officials said the action was prompted by evidence of environmental pollution, offensive odours, and potential health hazards caused by the hotel’s poor waste management practices.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the enforcement action in a statement on X.

He reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, saying the move was part of efforts to safeguard public health and maintain a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.

“Following public complaint and in pursuit of a safer, sustainable and cleaner Lagos, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office sealed off Nordic Hotel for deliberate discharge of untreated wastewater into drainage systems, causing offensive odour, public nuisance, and endangering human life,” Wahab wrote.

The commissioner also urged Lagosians to prioritise proper wastewater management and hygiene practices, noting that environmental responsibility must be shared by all to achieve lasting urban sustainability.

The LSWMO’s action forms part of an ongoing state campaign to combat environmental degradation and promote compliance with sanitation regulations.
