Kwara approves long-awaited worker promotions backlog

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved the Kwara worker promotions backlog, clearing delayed promotion exercises for civil servants and employees across state agencies, parastatals and media houses in a move aimed at strengthening workforce morale.

Dr Olufunke Shittu, Acting Head of Service, confirmed in an official memo that the approvals cover the 2025 promotion exercise for workers in the mainstream civil service, alongside the 2024 and 2025 promotions for staff in agencies, parastatals and media organisations.

The implementation takes effect from September 1, 2026.

Dr Olufunke Shittu said the decision followed the completion of due processes by the Civil Service Commission and other relevant bodies, as well as a careful assessment of the financial implications involved.

“The approval provides for the implementation of the 2024 and 2025 promotions for agencies, parastatals and media houses,” Dr Olufunke Shittu stated, adding that the financial benefits tied to the 2025 promotions for mainstream civil servants would also commence from the same effective date.

The resolution of the Kwara worker promotions backlog comes amid wider efforts by state governments across Nigeria to address longstanding welfare concerns within the public service.

In recent years, delays in promotions and entitlements have been a recurring issue, often affecting staff motivation and career progression.

Officials in Ilorin described the move as a timely and impactful intervention, noting that it is expected to energise the workforce and improve overall productivity.

Dr Olufunke Shittu emphasised that the measure reflects the administration’s deliberate commitment to staff welfare and institutional efficiency.

“The approvals are part of the proactive measures of the present administration towards strengthening the welfare of workers in the employ of the State Government,” Dr Olufunke Shittu said.

Beyond the immediate financial benefits, the development is also seen as a strategic step to restore confidence in the state’s civil service system.

Observers note that consistent promotion cycles are essential for maintaining a motivated and performance-driven workforce, particularly at a time when public institutions are under pressure to deliver more with limited resources.

While the government has not disclosed the exact number of workers affected, insiders suggest that hundreds of employees across multiple sectors stand to benefit from the long-awaited adjustments.

The approvals also align with broader governance reforms introduced under the AbdulRazaq administration, which have focused on transparency, fiscal discipline and service delivery.

For many workers, the clearance of the backlog represents more than a routine administrative update.

It signals recognition, stability and renewed momentum within the public service, reinforcing confidence that structured career progression remains achievable.
