King Charles Nigeria Commonwealth push as monarch urges stronger UK Nigeria trade ties and Nigeria’s central role in Commonwealth growth

King Charles III on Thursday hosted a state banquet in honour of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, using the occasion to urge Nigeria to take a stronger and more central role within the Commonwealth while deepening economic ties with the United Kingdom.

The remarks, delivered during the high-profile banquet at Windsor Castle, framed the King Charles Nigeria Commonwealth push as a call for expanded trade cooperation, regulatory alignment and long-term partnership between both nations.

King Charles III described Nigeria as “an economic powerhouse, a cultural force and an influential diplomatic voice,” emphasising its strategic importance within the Commonwealth and its potential to shape global commerce.

He stressed that reducing trade barriers and harmonising standards between the United Kingdom and Nigeria would unlock significant opportunities for businesses on both sides, particularly in trade, investment and innovation.

The monarch highlighted Nigeria’s youthful population as a major strength, noting that its more than 230 million citizens, with a large proportion under the age of 18, represent a powerful engine for enterprise and technological advancement.

He also pointed to growing economic linkages between both countries, including Nigerian investments in London, expanding tech partnerships and support from UK Export Finance for infrastructure development in Nigeria.

According to figures referenced during the address, bilateral travel and trade continue to strengthen, with Nigerian visitors contributing significantly to the UK economy while British travellers also maintain strong engagement with Nigeria.

King Charles further noted that Nigeria has become the United Kingdom’s largest export market in Africa, describing it as evidence of deepening commercial interdependence.

Beyond economics, he paid tribute to the Nigerian diaspora in the United Kingdom, describing over half a million Nigerians as a “living bridge” whose contributions span healthcare, business, academia, sport and the creative industries.

He also acknowledged Nigeria’s global cultural influence, particularly through Afrobeats and Nollywood, which continue to gain international recognition and reshape perceptions of African creativity.

Reflecting on historical ties between both countries, King Charles noted that while the shared past includes difficult chapters, it also offers lessons for building a more cooperative and forward-looking relationship.

Earlier engagements during the visit included meetings with British Christian and Muslim leaders alongside President Tinubu, which the monarch described as a powerful symbol of interfaith coexistence and unity.

Concluding his address, King Charles III praised Nigeria’s resilience and cultural identity, ending his toast with a light-hearted nod to Nigerian slang, saying: “Naija no dey carry last.”

The banquet underscored a renewed diplomatic tone between London and Abuja, with both sides signalling intent to deepen economic, cultural and political cooperation in the years ahead.
