James Van Der Beek dies aged 48 after colorectal cancer battle. The Dawson’s Creek star’s family confirms his peaceful passing

US actor James David Van Der Beek, best known for his lead role as Dawson Leery in the hit television series Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48 following a battle with colorectal cancer diagnosed in 2023.

James Van Der Beek died on Wednesday, according to a statement shared on his official Instagram page.

The statement said the actor met his final days with “courage, faith, and grace”.

His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, confirmed the news and asked for privacy as the family mourns.

“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” Kimberly Van Der Beek wrote.

James Van Der Beek rose to international prominence with his portrayal of Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek, which aired from 1998 to 2003 and followed the lives of teenagers growing up in a small Massachusetts town.

The series became a defining cultural moment of its era and cemented his place in television history.

Beyond Dawson’s Creek, James Van Der Beek appeared in films including Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction.

Although he built a varied career in film and television, the actor often acknowledged the lasting legacy of his breakout role.

In a 2011 interview, James Van Der Beek reflected on his career, saying he was proud of his work and harboured no regrets about the path he had taken.

Tributes have since poured in from colleagues and fans across the entertainment industry, many describing him as a talented performer and devoted family man.
