JAMB sacks staff over candidate extortion

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board said it had sacked a staff member for JAMB staff extortion of candidates, in a bulletin that framed the dismissal as part of a wider clean-up of admissions and examinations.

The Board did not name the employee. It said the case showed that its campaign against fraud was not aimed only at outsiders.

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for extorting unsuspecting candidates, in further demonstration of its renewed commitment to flushing out bad eggs from the system,” the Board said.

JAMB said staff who undermine the Board or exploit candidates and the public will face “severe consequences in accordance with established rules.” It added that the same force used against external fraudsters would apply inside the organisation, and that rank would not protect anyone.

“The Board noted that the action sends a clear and unequivocal message that its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct applies to everyone, irrespective of status or position.” JAMB said it would not “shield or spare any of its own staff members who cross the line or abuse the trust reposed in them.”

The bulletin did not give the sum taken, the number of candidates involved, or the date of the offence. JAMB said it would keep a clean, accountable workforce and that the fight against fraud had to start within the Board.
