NAF Crash: Isa Adeshina dies 9 days after becoming best cadet

Flying Officer Isa Muyiwa Adeshina was among the 25 people killed in the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State, just nine days after he achieved a milestone he had spent more than a decade working towards.

Adeshina had recently been commissioned into the Nigerian Air Force as a flying officer after distinguishing himself as the best graduating cadet of Branch Commission Course 3.

The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, with registration NAF 931, crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State in the early hours of Monday, claiming the lives of all 25 people on board.

Adeshina was reportedly the only flying officer aboard the ill-fated aircraft.

His death has cast a particularly painful shadow over what should have been the beginning of a new chapter in his military career.

Adeshina’s journey to becoming a commissioned officer was built over more than a decade of service in the Nigerian Air Force.

He joined the force in August 2010 as a member of Basic Military Training Course 27.

He began his military career as an air intelligence operator and gradually rose through the ranks, eventually attaining the rank of sergeant in September 2025.

His performance and experience later earned him selection for the branch commissioning programme, a pathway through which serving personnel can become commissioned officers.

That opportunity culminated in his graduation from Branch Commission Course 3.

On September 26, Adeshina was commissioned at a passing-out parade held at the Nigerian Defence Academy headquarters in Kaduna.

The ceremony was a significant moment for the serviceman, who had risen from an enlisted position to become a commissioned officer.

His outstanding performance during the course earned him the award for best graduating cadet.

He reportedly received the award from Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, during the ceremony.

Nine days later, his promising career was cut short.

According to reports, Adeshina was travelling to visit his family in Lagos and had not yet reported to his official posting when the aircraft crashed in Ondo State.

Long before joining the Nigerian Air Force, Adeshina had already established himself as an educator.

Between 2004 and 2010, he worked at As-Siraat Comprehensive College, an Islamic school in the Amukoko area of Lagos.

There, he taught Physics and Mathematics before eventually rising to the position of vice-principal.

His former colleagues and students remembered him as an intelligent, disciplined and dedicated teacher who made a lasting impression on those around him.

Ustadh Ahmad, the proprietor of the school, described Adeshina as exceptionally intelligent and diligent.

According to him, Adeshina’s departure for the Air Force programme was difficult for the school because many parents had pleaded with the management to retain him.

“He was so loved by the parents to the extent that when he wanted to leave the school for the Air Force programme, many parents pleaded that we should do everything to retain him,” Ahmad recalled.

He added that Adeshina’s later achievements in the military did not surprise him because of the young man’s character and ability.

News of Adeshina’s death prompted an outpouring of grief from some of his former students, many of whom remembered him not simply as a teacher but as an important influence during their formative years.

Lawal Kaothar described him as one of the people who helped build the foundation of students at As-Siraat Comprehensive College.

“He was one of the foundations that built us at As-Siraat Comprehensive College,” Kaothar wrote.

Another former student, Ibrahim Damilola, recalled how Adeshina’s personal conversations about faith had influenced him.

Damilola said the lessons he received from his former teacher had remained with him years after leaving the school.

He recalled how Adeshina’s stories about faith encouraged him to remain consistent with his prayers.

The tributes highlight the impact Adeshina had beyond his military career and show why his death has been particularly painful for those who knew him before he became a commissioned officer.

Adeshina’s story was also notable because of the path he took through the Nigerian Air Force.

Rather than entering the service directly as a commissioned officer, he spent years serving as an enlisted personnel before earning the opportunity to become an officer.

His promotion to sergeant in 2025 marked another stage in that journey.

His subsequent selection for branch commissioning demonstrated the progress he had made within the service.

Emerging as the best graduating cadet of his commissioning course was the culmination of years of work and professional development.

The honour made his death only days later all the more poignant.

Adeshina was among the 25 people who died when the NAF 931 aircraft crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State.

The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the victims comprised five crew members and 20 passengers.

The aircraft had been involved in a routine mission from Benin to Lagos before the fatal incident.

The crash triggered grief across the military community and among the families, friends and colleagues of those on board.

For Adeshina’s loved ones, the tragedy came at a particularly devastating time.

He had only recently celebrated his achievement as a newly commissioned officer and was yet to begin his official posting.

Adeshina’s life brought together education, military service and a commitment to personal values.

He spent his early professional years teaching young people before moving into the Nigerian Air Force, where he steadily advanced through the ranks.

His eventual emergence as the best graduating cadet showed the level of achievement he reached before his life was abruptly cut short.

His former students have continued to remember the lessons he taught them, while colleagues and members of the military community have mourned a serviceman whose career had entered a promising new phase.

Adeshina, who hailed from Iwo in Osun State, was survived by his mother.

His story has since become one of the deeply poignant accounts to emerge from the Ondo aircraft crash — a reminder of a life marked by service, achievement and the lasting influence he had on the people he encountered.
