Adeola’s 24-hour libel threat: we are ready for court, not television — Hunye

Adeola’s 24-hour libel threat: we are ready for court, not television — Hunye

Hon. Abayomi Hunye said on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, that he welcomed a threatened lawsuit from Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola over claims about the senator’s ancestral origin.

The reply came through Femi Oyewale, media adviser to Hon. Abayomi Hunye, a day after Chief Kayode Odunaro, media adviser to Senator Solomon Adeola, issued a 24-hour demand for proof or libel proceedings.

Senator Solomon Adeola, the All Progressives Congress candidate for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election and senator for Ogun West, through Chief Kayode Odunaro accused Hon. Abayomi Hunye and Ambassador Folake Marcus-Bello of the Peoples Democratic Party of alleging an Ekiti origin on Channels Television without evidence.

The Adeola camp said one speaker could not name a town in Ekiti and that another misstated the location of family graves. “Enough is enough. They should produce their evidence in 24 hours or be ready for my lawsuits,” the senator’s statement said.

The Adeola lawsuit response called the ultimatum a “political jamboree” and “media gimmick.” Femi Oyewale wrote that a case was already in court and that “truth is an absolute defence against libel.”

The statement said Hon. Abayomi Hunye was “more than ready to meet Senator Adeola in a court of competent jurisdiction” and would tender “robust, verifiable facts and documentary evidence substantiating our claims regarding his alleged Ekiti ancestry.” Those documents have not been set out in the press note.

The origin fight is not new. Critics have long tied Senator Solomon Adeola’s career in Lagos to doubts about Ogun West roots.

His supporters, including some traditional rulers in Egba and Yewa, call him an indigene of Ilaro and Ogun.

The All Progressives Congress in the state treats the charge as campaign weather. Origin and eligibility, if properly pleaded, can become a court question. A press claim is not a finding.

Politics around the two men is already raw. The APC national secretariat has described Hon. Abayomi Hunye, from Tube in Ipokia, as a suspended member and an “impostor” on the ticket question.

Party figures say Senator Solomon Adeola won the official primary with a near-unanimous tally while Hon. Abayomi Hunye ran a parallel exercise.

Several pre-election suits against the Adeola candidacy were withdrawn in late August and early September. None of that settles ancestry. It does show why both camps now prefer the phrase “see you in court.”

Until filings are public, the public has two scripts. One side says a stranger is being sold to Ogun West. The other says a rival is recycling a lie on television.

Evidence, if it exists, will have to survive cross-examination. Titles and 24-hour clocks will not.
