The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have agreed to work together to deliver stable and reliable electricity to households, businesses and industries in Lagos under the 24/7 Energy Zones pilot approved by President Bola Tinubu.

The agreement followed a high-level technical meeting at Lagos House, Marina, between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, senior officials of the Ministry of Power and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The 24/7 Energy Zones pilot will begin in Lagos before extending to the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors, with the broader objective of improving power supply across major commercial and industrial centres in the country.

Tegbe said the Ministry had engaged electricity distribution companies and secured commitments from them to take more power and provide steady and reliable electricity to customers along the Lagos corridor.

He also reaffirmed the Ministry’s readiness to work with the Lagos State Government across four priority areas approved by the President: grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion, and governance and regulatory harmonisation.

Sanwo-Olu commended the Federal Government’s delegation for what he described as a serious approach to addressing longstanding challenges in the power sector.

The governor noted that Tegbe had demonstrated a willingness and capacity to tackle persistent issues in the sector since assuming office as Minister of Power.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos was equally committed to finding pragmatic solutions that would make the electricity market more effective for Nigerians, particularly residents and businesses in Lagos.

He stressed the need to build a bankable, collaborative and competitive electricity market capable of supporting economic activity across the state.

To translate the agreement into concrete action, Tegbe announced the establishment of a Joint Technical Committee to address outstanding technical and regulatory issues and recommend the next steps for implementation.

The committee will be chaired by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy.

Its membership will include representatives of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Lagos State Independent System Operator (LAISO), Lagos State Electricity Agency (LSEA), and the Office of the Minister of Power.

The Joint Technical Committee will report to a Steering Committee chaired by Governor Sanwo-Olu and co-chaired by the Minister of Power.

The Steering Committee will also include the Special Adviser to the President on Power, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power and the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy.
