FCT Poll: ADC vs APC

The FCT council election sees ADC testing its political strength in Abuja, while Wike backs APC candidates, triggering PDP withdrawals in key area councils

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections scheduled for Saturday present a major political test for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as the party seeks to assert its growing influence in Abuja.

The polls will be conducted across Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali, where voters will elect area council chairmen and councillors.

The ADC, backed by prominent opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, has intensified grassroots campaigns in recent weeks.

The party’s AMAC chairmanship candidate, Dr. Moses Paul, described the election as a turning point for accountable governance, pledging to work with all lawful authorities while prioritising residents’ interests.

Meanwhile, the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has openly declared support for candidates aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s vision, regardless of party affiliation.

Wike, a member of the PDP, has been actively campaigning for the APC and recently saw PDP candidates in Bwari and AMAC withdraw in favour of APC contenders.

Residents across Abuja markets and communities expressed varied expectations, with many demanding improved infrastructure, security, and responsive leadership rather than campaign promises.

The outcome of the election is expected to reflect shifting political alliances in the FCT and could shape future alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
