Norway defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 to reach World Cup round of 16

Erling Haaland’s late winner helped Norway defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 and advance to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, setting up a clash with Brazil in a gripping display of resilience and quality

In the humid evening of 30 June 2026 at a packed stadium in North America, Norway striker Erling Haaland, the Manchester City forward, delivered a decisive strike to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast, booking his nation’s place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Norway manager Ståle Solbakken watched from the sidelines as his side absorbed early pressure before striking on the counter.

Ivory Coast, led by their experienced coach, dominated possession in the opening stages through patient build-up play but found Norway’s compact defensive shape difficult to penetrate.

The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute when Arsenal midfielder Martin Ødegaard threaded a precise through-ball to winger Antonio Nusa.

The young Norwegian cut inside from the left, cleverly using defender Guéla Doué as a screen, and unleashed a curling right-footed effort into the top corner, beating goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Both sides traded substitutions after the interval, with Ivory Coast introducing dynamic attackers Amad Diallo and Elye Wahi in search of an equaliser. Norway brought on fresh legs in Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup.

The tactical adjustments bore fruit for the Ivorians in the 74th minute when substitute Amad Diallo combined brilliantly with Nicolas Pépé on the right flank, before driving a low shot past Ørjan Nyland to level the scores at 1-1.

With the match hanging in the balance, Norway showed remarkable character. In the 85th minute, midfielder Patrick Berg exploited a lapse in Ivory Coast’s defensive organisation to provide the assist.

Haaland, ever the clinical finisher at 25 years old, pounced on the pass and rifled home the winner, sending Norwegian fans into raptures.

“It was a tough battle, but we stayed disciplined and took our chances when they came,” Haaland reflected after the final whistle. “To score the winner and help the team progress feels incredible. Now we look forward to facing Brazil.”

The victory marks a significant milestone for Norway, who had not advanced this far in recent World Cup campaigns, highlighting their resurgence under Solbakken.

Ivory Coast’s campaign ends with disappointment despite their bright spells and equal share of opportunities, including four shots on target apiece.

This result adds to a narrative of Norwegian determination, building on their strong qualifying performances and key moments of individual brilliance that have captured global attention.

Norway will now prepare for a formidable last-16 encounter against Brazil, promising another chapter of high-stakes drama.
