Emeka Uzor killed in South Africa; NUSA calls for transparent investigation and full prosecution amid rising violence against Nigerians

The Nigerian community in South Africa has been thrown into mourning following the fatal shooting of Emeka Uzor at approximately 3pm on Sunday at Carltex Garage in Windsor East, Randburg, Johannesburg.

Uzor, who hailed from Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, was reportedly in his vehicle when he was shot in what is suspected to be an assassination.

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) described the incident as part of a disturbing pattern of targeted violence against Nigerian nationals living in the country.

NUSA President, Smart Nwobi, and National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, urged South African authorities, including the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation.

The union stressed that anyone found culpable must face the full force of the law.

The union also called on the Nigerian government, through the offices of the Consul General and High Commissioner, to engage diplomatically with South African counterparts and to work with NUSA to address such incidents legally and diplomatically.

“NUSA is confident in South Africa’s justice system and hopes the individuals responsible will be identified and prosecuted, allowing the family of the victim to find closure,” the statement read.

The union appealed to the Nigerian community in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding during this difficult period, while confirming that it is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served.

Emeka Uzor’s death has renewed calls for stronger measures to protect Nigerian nationals and tackle the recurring violence targeting the community across South Africa.
