Forbes ranking: Top 10 richest people in the world in 2026

Elon Musk has retained his position as the world’s richest person, with his estimated fortune rising to $892 billion in August, according to Forbes.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief added about $202 billion to his wealth during the month, recovering sharply from a $363 billion decline recorded in July.

Forbes attributed the latest surge largely to gains in the value of Musk’s holdings in SpaceX and Tesla, although his fortune remains subject to significant fluctuations as the value of his assets changes.

Musk is now less than $110 billion short of becoming a trillionaire again, having earlier this year become the first person in history to reach the milestone.

According to Forbes’ estimates as of Tuesday, the 10 richest people in the world are:

  1. Elon Musk, $892 billion
  2. Larry Page, $277 billion
  3. Jeff Bezos, $268 billion
  4. Sergey Brin, $256 billion
  5. Michael Dell, $241 billion
  6. Mark Zuckerberg, $197 billion
  7. Larry Ellison, $193 billion
  8. Jensen Huang, $191 billion
  9. Steve Ballmer, $155 billion
  10. Amancio Ortega, $148 billion

Musk’s dominance at the top of the ranking is particularly striking. His estimated fortune is more than three times that of Page, the Google co-founder and second-richest person globally.

Page, however, was the biggest loser among the top 10 during August, with his fortune falling by about $15 billion.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos lost approximately $10 billion, while Google co-founder Sergey Brin saw his fortune decline by about $13 billion during the same period.

The biggest climber after Musk was Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, whose fortune increased by $25 billion to $193 billion after Oracle shares gained 15 per cent.

Ellison consequently moved from eighth to seventh position, while Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang slipped from seventh to eighth despite adding about $17 billion to his fortune.

There were also significant movements at the lower end of the ranking.

Former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer climbed from 11th to ninth after adding $10 billion to his fortune.

Spanish billionaire Amancio Ortega, founder of the fashion empire behind Zara, moved from 12th to 10th after his wealth increased by about $5 billion.

The latest reshuffle pushed Bernard Arnault and Warren Buffett out of the top 10.

Both billionaires recorded declines in the value of their respective holdings in luxury group LVMH and investment conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway.

Collectively, the 10 richest people in the world are now worth an estimated $2.8 trillion, up from $2.6 trillion the previous month.

Forbes has tracked the fortunes of the world’s billionaires since 1987, while its Real-Time Billionaires ranking changes continuously in response to movements in stock prices and other assets.

The September 2026 ranking is dominated by Americans, with nine US billionaires and one Spaniard making the top 10.

The list also underlines the enormous wealth generated by technology, artificial intelligence, luxury retail and other major global businesses, with several of the world’s richest individuals deriving much of their fortunes from companies they founded or helped build.
