EFCC naira mutilation arrest as woman is detained in Maiduguri over viral video involving N500 note misuse
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested Fatima Muhammed in Maiduguri, Borno State, over alleged naira mutilation following a viral TikTok video.

The mutilation arrest was confirmed by the agency’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, who said the suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday after being tracked within the Maiduguri metropolis.
According to the commission, Fatima Muhammed was seen in the widely circulated video using a N500 note to clean mucus from her nose, an act considered an abuse of the national currency under Nigerian law.
The EFCC naira mutilation arrest followed public outrage after the clip surfaced on TikTok, prompting swift action by investigators who relied on digital tracing to locate the suspect.
Dele Oyewale stated that Fatima Muhammed is currently under investigation at the EFCC’s Maiduguri facility and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
