EFCC clears pastor Jerry Eze after fraud probe

EFCC Jerry Eze investigation reveals six-month probe into alleged money laundering before the cleric was cleared of wrongdoing

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that the commission investigated Pastor Jerry Eze for six months over suspected money laundering before clearing him of any wrongdoing.

Olukoyede made the revelation on Wednesday during the Jerry Eze Foundation Business Grant Award Ceremony in Abuja.

He said the investigation into the founder of Jerry Eze was triggered by intelligence reports and petitions following unusual foreign currency inflows into a domiciliary account linked to the cleric.

According to him, the commission observed multiple international deposits from countries including the United States, Colombia, Sri Lanka, and Togo, prompting further scrutiny.

Olukoyede explained that investigators were assigned to examine the financial records before the cleric was invited for questioning.

He said the cleric later provided explanations on the source and purpose of the funds, including claims of charitable activities and support for individuals in need.

Following the review of findings, the EFCC chairman said the commission found no evidence of financial wrongdoing.

He added that the agency subsequently commended the cleric after completing its assessment.

The remark drew reactions at the event, where Jerry Eze was present.

Olukoyede stressed that while the EFCC remains committed to investigating suspicious financial activities, it also recognises integrity where established.

He further noted that the agency would continue to monitor financial transactions as part of its preventive mandate against corruption.

The EFCC boss also expressed concern over unethical practices involving some religious leaders, stating that a number of clerics have faced investigation and prosecution in the past.

He urged religious institutions to maintain high ethical standards and ensure that places of worship are not misused for illicit activities.
